[HANASHIR:3857] Music in Traditional Jewish Culture and Society

Hi all,

First of all, my apologies if this message is not appropriate for the
group - I've been lurking here for a month or so and it seems to me that
this may be of interest to a lot of people here.

Bar-Ilan University in Israel has recently opened registration for it's
Virtual Jewish University offering courses for credit (and audit) on the
Internet.

The course that's really exciting is one given by Prof. Edwin Seroussi
on "Music in Traditional Jewish Culture and Society". The course makes
extensive use of streaming audio and video, and provides a comparative
analysis of the many different genres of Jewish music.

Here's an exerpt from the Syllabus.

Goals of the course
1) To provide the student with a basic understanding of the concept of
music within Jewish culture.
2) To define the main genres of music within Jewish culture.
3) To describe the major Jewish musical styles.

Topics:
The liturgy
Music in non-liturgical events
Sepharad I: Turkish and Arabic music in the liturgy; the maqam system;
Sepharad II: Folk song repertoires in Judeo-Spanish and Judeo-Arabic.
Romances, coplas and canciones
Ashkenaz I: Liturgical music; Hassidic niggun; Hazzanut as concert music

Ashkenaz II: Yiddish and Klezmer music
Yemen: Different Yemenite styles; the Diwan; perceptions of Yemenite
music
Jewish ?art music?: Expression of Jewish contents through music, as
opposed to music which is committed to Jewish functions.
and more...

For those of you who do not know Prof. Edwin Seroussi, aside from begin
head of the Music dept. at Bar-Ilan University, he is also the deputy
director of the Jewish Music Research Centre at the Hebrew University
and counselor at the Cantor's Institute of the Jewish Theological
Seminary of America, New York. He has served as President of the Israel
Committee of the International Music Council (UNESCO), member of the
board, the Israel Broadcasting Authority, Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra,
and Renanot - Institute of Jewish Music and Jerusalem Baroque
Orchestra. He will be on-line conducting this course starting Oct. 4th.

I'm also happy to field questions directly.
