have an "apprentice" making the rounds with me as I teach music to the
primary grades this year. Any suggestions on how to make this sort of
 arrangement work effectively? >>

I haven't had a musical apprentice since I'm only in the beginning stage of
teaching music myself, but I have helped several junior level teachers in our
sunday school program and I think the same principles apply. I teach the
same one-hour class at two different time slots, 9:00 and then 10:00 for this
year. The first hour, I would take the lead and have my assistant help with
classroom management, passing out handouts, leading a discussion, etc. The
next class, we switch roles. This has helped several new teachers move on
the following year to their own class. I think in the same way, having the
apprentice watch you and then try it his/herself would be a great teaching
experience, and then discuss later what worked and what didn't. Some people
are more shy while other jump right in. Also, encourage your apprentice to
listen to cd's of the music (if available) you will probably use in advance
of the class. And let the apprentice make some decisions about what song to
use when the time is right. One mistake is to ALWAYS take the lead and make
all the decisions. A basic attitude of sharing and being supportive helps,
and also, remembering how much one learns by teaching another. Hope some of
this is helpful.
