Dear Callie,
It is possible to convert MP3 files to WAV files, and CDs are made up of
WAV files. If you have a CD writer, you can create your own CD from these
files. However, the quality will not be "CD quality", since MP3 is not as
dense or as accurate as WAV format.
Is it legal? It's no different from making a tape from a CD. As long as
the copy is for your own enjoyment (not to give or sell to someone else)
AND the CD is "legal", the copy is legal.
Is it ethical? Speaking from an artist's point of view, it would be nice
if you paid for EVERY copy of my music you have, but I also understand that
I sold or gave you one copy of my music which can only be played on your
computer (so far). If you want to make a copy so you can play it in the
car, I'm OK with that.
If, however, you downloaded these songs from a site that "stole" them from
me, I'm not happy and it's not acceptable!
For an authoritative answer, ask your lawyer and/or rabbi! Just remember
that, if you ask the rabbi, you have to abide by his/her t'shuva whether or
not you like the response!
Your friend,
Andy
