[HANASHIR:3361] V'shamru

It turns out this Friday night I'm teaching the "South African folktune" 
V'shamru, arr. by E. Werner (No. 45 in Gates of Song).  That's the one whose 
origins were discussed at length here earlier this year.  I want to say 
something about its history, but I can't remember what was finally 
concluded.  Can someone help me with a short summary?  Thanks!
