[HANASHIR:3205] bring hava nashira home

So, I got up in front of our congregation tonight to do my cantorial
soloist thing and I looked out at all the non-singing faces and thought
about where I was a week ago and how different it was from what I was
currently facing and then the power of Hava Nashira overtook me and I
sang as though I were still back in Wisconsin. I even taught Salaam as
the closing song (I'm the yutz who was planning to teach it during my
song session but chickened out because I didn't know if anyone would
like it and because I was too intimidated to sing in front of Debbie)
and the congregation sang it as though they knew it already and it was a
wonderful moment.

Last year (my first year) I was obsessed with getting new repertoire.
All I wanted to do was tape new songs. I was so disappointed that we
couldn't tape the services because of all the music I couldn't get on
tape. This year, I still was obessed with getting new repertoire though
I finally started to understand that Hava Nashira is, for me, about
something other than getting new repertoire - it's about nourishing my
soul so that I can go back to my congregation and, hopefully, inspire
them to use music to nourish their souls.

Next year's Hava Nashira goals: nourish my soul AND sing in front of
Debbie...
