Yom Kippur is a fast day.  I cannot IMAGINE a cantor or lay leader drinking 
at the bimah while the entire congregation is sitting there, hungry and 
thirsty!

The commandment is to "afflict" ourselves on the day of Yom Kippur.  The 
additional thirst brought on by the fast day gives it a very spiritual 
meaning for me.  Despite it, I have done some of my most meaningful and 
heartfelt singing well into the afternoon of this very long, dry day!
