[HANASHIR:2921] Re: Authorship of tune to Ufros Aleinu

Linda is right. I've just asked Arthur Waskow (I work for him) and he
definitely put together the tune, along with a new set of lyrics - I hadn't
heard these english ones that follow the hebrew Ufros Alenu line - the tune
remains the same. He's not entirely sure if he is totally responsible for
the tune, or if it was an adaptation of something he heard elsewhere! But he
is credited with words and music in a 1986 songbook that is now out of print
called Shiron L'Shalom: a sourcebook of Jewish songs for peace education,
ed. by Abrams and Sollogub.

Here are the rest of the words:
Spread over all of us/ the Sukkah of Shalom (x2)

Spread over all of us/the webbed green leaves of earth (x2)

For we too live our lives/in the web of life on earth (x2)

Spread over all of us/a house that trembles in the wind (x2)

For we too live our lives/the millions who tremble when the wind is cold (x2)

Spread over all of us/the unshielded shelter of the powerless
Spread over all of us/the shelter of the powerless

For we too live our lives/unshielded from the Flood of Fire (x2)

Spread over all of us/the house that gives us unity,
Spread over all of us/the house of harmony.

(finish with Ufros alenu... and Spread over all of us/the Sukkah of Shalom)

The rhythms and ways that the words are repeated in the songbook are a bit
different to the way I remember learning the tune. I'll try to bring it
along and can share it with anyone who is interested at Hava Nashira.

Regards,
Rachel Gurevitz
