I am watching this discussion and decided to put my two cents in. For over
30 years my mother taught music at our temple without benefit of instruments.
I took over when she retired and taught music for several more years, the
same way.
Our students never suffered. We were able to use our hands to clap,
encourage the kids to join hands in circles, and dance with them around the
room. Being accustomed to no instruments made it easy to now lead our
alternative minyan (Reform) where we do all the music ourselves without
cantor or organ. If I and my co-leaders are late starting a song, the group
starts on their own!
Much as I enjoy instrumental musical accompaniment to some things, I must say
that I now actually prefer the worship service without it, especially the
organ, which makes it ponderous and takes away the ability to adjust tempi or
be spontaneous.
