to follow up on Judah's comments, it not only could have come from a french
sephardic community, it _did_ -- carpetaras (i'm spelling it wrong, i'm
sure) to be more exact.

further, one should not confuse "sephardic" music with "mizrakhi" music
(the latter specifically referring to music from the middle east). for
example, the spanish/portuguese music which hailed from amsterdam or
england has much of its tonality rooted in western music systems (here, i'm
thinking of DeSola, et.al.).
