One solution I've used is to change the kind of guitar i take whan i travel.
While dont perform on the road, i do take my guitar with me to keep me
entertained on business trips. I bought a travel guitar(vagabond), which
conviently fits in the over head compartment. It plays fine, but has a few
problems:

1) since they tend to be oddly shaped (except the new taylor) I get a lot of
"what is that thing" kind of comments.

2) due to the small size the volume is weak and requires a pickup for
anything beyond a small room.

3) the vagabonddoes have a bit of a banjo twang to it.

4) due to the shape, both the Vagabond and the Martin backpacker require the
use of the strap, even when sitting down. Trying to strum a down stroke with
a pick on a Martin will cause it go shooting out of your lap due to the
tapered shape.

Strings are a little close together compared to my other guitars.

But that said, the thing is so small i have even gotten a comment that i am
carrying a guitar with me- even after playing in front of the flight crew.

jus another option
