Dear Chevra,
The Kedusha is the part of the prayer service where we describe the ophanim
and seraphim (angels) on high, singing their one and only song (can you
imagine having only one song?)...Kadosh, Kadosh, Kadosh to the Holy one on
High. I never realized the power of this piece until the first time I heard
this version of the Kedusha, using Psalm 148 rather than the traditional
Kedusha, when Reb Zalman lead it in a Shabbat service at Elat Chayyim. I was
moved and delighted. We sang as if we ourselves were the angels on high.
Later I transcribed a tape of Zalman Shachter-Shalomi leading it in his
inimitable way, with a contemporary translation and a bit of humor. I have
made a few English changes in the translation (read: improvements) even
though it challenges the original Hebrew. But then again we are creative,
passionate contemporary Jews, so its allowed. I have used this in many
services and people love it. Hope you will too. Enjoy,
Rosalind Glazer
