I've written several Purim plays with lots of music "to the tune of.." I looked
for something that was less dependant on the particular story I was doing a
take-off on and closer to the Purim story, itself. The following is taken from
a play entitled "The Bridges of Shushan County." The premise is that Queen
Esther runs into an old neighborhood friend of hers (named Yente) who recognizes
her as "Hadassah from the neighborhood." Esther and Yente (who is exactly what
her name implies) then have a conversation where Esther frantically convinces
Yente that she canNOT go around telling everyone that "Hadassah from the
neighborhood" is now the queen. This song forms part of the conversation:
[TO THE SECOND PART OF MATCHMAKER]
Yente: Sarah, dear Leah, have I got some news for you;
Remember Hadassah, believe me `cause it's true,
Now she's called Esther, G-d bless her.
Who knew?
She hasn't been here lately - was nowhere to be seen.
It's not because she hates us;
Just `cause she's queen!
[TO THE TUNE OF THE FIRST PART OF "MATCHMAKER.?]
Esther: Yente, oh Yente, you can't say word
It would be bad, if someone heard.
Tell me, please, Yente - what would I do
If they knew that I'm a Jew?
Yente: Hadassah - oops, I mean Esther,
Please tell me what's the big deal?
I think that it would be better
If everyone knew what was really real.
Esther: [SHOUTED] NO!!!
Yente, dear Yente, please take my word.
It would be bad, if someone heard.
Even if I really couldn't say why
I really must try
To listen to my -
My cousin Mordechai.
