as far as the eitz hayim is concerned, the music is in print in a book
called "kol rina" for two part choir (you can purchase through tara music:
http://www.jewishmusic.com/ i think it was written by a portnoy, but not
marshall.
as far as changing melodies for the barkhu (and by the way, when we use the
"la, la" version, i'm assuming you're talking about the ben siegel
composition), the barkhu line may be chanted differently depending on time
of day, day, or origin of your jewish community (and then use the cong.
melody for the response). for example, on fri. evening in a german shul,
you may go to the relative major and chant the barkhu C-F-G-F-G-A etc. and
step down back into the relative minor. in a eastern european shul, do the
same thing but make the A flat. on shabbat morning, totally different tune.
don't want to get too wrapped up in a discussion about nusakh, but i guess
that may be where the change may be happening. if it's being done in a
"nusakhically" literate way.
