Hi friends -
As both an invested Cantor and the Associate Dean of Hebrew Union College (the
Rabbinical/Cantorial Seminary for the Reform movement), I guess that I can
answer the question as to how one becomes and invested Cantor.
Cantorial School for the Reform movement is 4 years (soon to be 5) years of
graduate school, the first of which is at HUC in Jerusalem. Over the course
of the 5 years, one studies Hebrew (from Bible to Modern and everything in
between); Shabbat, Holiday, Daily and Life Cycle liturgy (for meaning and
history); Text; History; Jewish Education; Philosophy; and has a series of
musical workshops each year in both traditional and reform repertoire for all
of the above liturgy. Add to that Yiddish and Israeli Art Songs, Conducting,
Music for Religious School, Crisis Counseling, Harmonizing the modes, and a
few other courses, along with a Masters Thesis and Recital, and you have a bit
of the picture. I'm sure I left out some.
I'm happy to send out catalogues and more info to interested parties, and
would also be happy to chat about it at Hava Nashira this year.
It's quite a time commitment for sure, but one comes out ready to serve as a
clergy person in every sense of the word, and it's worth it.
You can email me privately if you'd like more info.
