[HANASHIR:2266] Re: "The Tree Song"

Not only do I cop to using "The Tree Song", I recently learned I've been
butchering Josh's lyrics, and with him right here in my home town and
everything. Or should I say "lopping" the lyrics, or perhaps
"uprooting".....

Whatever the word, I think Josh already knows from his sources that the
folk process has taken hold across the Caldecott Tunnel.

I've also been told by knowledgeable sources (my students) that it's not
as fun when I do it in religious school as when they do it at Camp
Swig. *sigh*

(note: I stand by my re-gendering of my "tree". I sing "And s/he's a
tree!" But it's kinda hard to pronounce the /. But after all, "etz
chayim hi", right? And nobody remind me that "Hi" (or "hee" if you
prefer) stands for the Torah. I know it does.)

In any case, I think one of the highlights of my life will be having had
the honor of attending Hava Nashira '94, when the "Tree" song was first
(IIRC) introduced. I always encourage my classes to imagine 50+ Jewish
songleaders aged 18- to 60+ lined up around a camp dining hall, miming
"we grow, we grow, we grow" and making weird tree shapes.

Oh well, I guess it's still not as fun as when they do it at Camp Swig.

Now what we need is a Purim cover (computer geeks would call it a
"port") of this song.

But somehow the lyrics "Pu pu pu pu pu pu pu pu......" strike terror in
my heart.

Halfway to Adar....

Joel
