[HANASHIR:2108] Re: Torah chant



Susan:  It all depends.  My rabbi can chant Torah directly from the scroll
with about 5 minutes notice  I can do it from the scroll with about 2 weeks
notice.  When I visited my Mom's shul (Reconstructionist) they let me do it
from the chumash, but I don't think they would at more traditional shuls.  

If you chant enough, you can fake the melody just by using logic.  At least
in  the  (non-Orthodox) shuls I've been in, no one will jump on you if fake
the melody, while they will correct you if you get the vowel wrong.  Since
my musicality is way ahead of my Hebrew (grammar at least),  I find that
the hard part!  Mazel tov on learning to "leyn" as it's called. Emily
