Dear Susan,

In our Reform congregation, one may either read or chant, but it is always
directly from the Torah, not a Chumash.  I never learned trope, but do read
quite often from the Torah.  One practices using the tikun which is printed
with the text exactly as it appears in the scrolls next to text with n'kudot.
After several times practicing, I am then familiar enough with the text to be
able to read it unaided by the vowels.  The more I read, of course, the more
words become familiar and it takes less practice to prepare.
