I am looking to add a few more alternative, singable and accessible melodies
for the Shabbat service to the ones in Gates of Prayer both for my junior
and adult choirs and for me when I am soloing. I would especially like to
hear about melodies which have caught on in your congregations. Ideally,
these songs would be in Hebrew or both Hebrew and English, either
contemporary or folkloric (not attributed to a composer). Music not
attributed to a composer has often survived for some time through the oral
tradition before being notated, making sure only the most singable and
appealing survive which is why I like to include them.
So far I am dipping into the work of Debbie Friedman, Jeff Klepper and
Daniel Freelander, Marshall Portnoy and Steve Dropkin as well as finding
some music not attributed to a composer and therefore probably passed on by
oral tradition for a while before being written down. In my experience,
melodies which have been sung a lot before being notated are usually very
appealing and singable.
As my rabbi has done, I'd like to wish you all a good remaining 8 and a
half months of 5759.
