[HANASHIR:2005] RE: From Karen: Adam Sandler's vs. other Chanukah songs

I heartily concur with Karen's ideas that the "fun" songs belong right
up there along with the traditional ones. If anyone is interested, I
have the words to "Eight Days of Hanukah" sung to the tune of Mary
Hopkins's "Those Were the Days". As for the Adam Sandler song, just
remember that there are some objectionable verses in there, like "smoke
your marijuana-ka", which may not be appropriate for Sunday School
groups. Ask your rabbi!

Happy Chanukah, all

Brian

Subject: [HANASHIR:2003] From Karen: Adam Sandler's vs.
other Chanukah songs

Having just rewatched the Wedding Singer, I have to admit
that Adam
Sandler is one of those people who brings a cool, "it's ok
to be
Jewish" attitude to the movies...I think that it's great
that his
Chanukah song (which I have yet to hear on the radio!) has
gained
popularity. As far as whether it should be taught to
religious school
students, my opinion goes like this: once they know the
blessings,
Maoz Tsur, Al Hanisim, and some other traditional songs,
why not?
Last Sunday, as we sang funny dreidl verses (many thanks to
you all)
and some other Chanukah songs, my 6th graders started
yelling out "Put
on your yamakah, here comes Chanukah!" and laughing and
having a good
time. They were having fun, doing Jewish music; what a
concept!

             Happy Chanukah,
             -Karen D.
