The approach Roslyn suggests is best.  As a conductor, I can assure you that
teaching someone who has pitch and rhythm problems to sing WHILE you're
teaching them the music is nearly impossible.  Don't try it; teacher and
student alike get very frustrated.  Using pitch recognition exercises and
interval work is a positive technique.  Constant work can turn anyone into an
able singer.  But one must be willing to put the time in.  Once a week at
"music" or at choir rehearsal just won't cut it.
