I agree with both Brian and Janice.  In my experience of trying to teach
"pitch-challenged" adults and children (including my mother, who used to
sing along with the radio in a complete monotone, but nevertheless enjoyed
it), there really are people who lack this particular type of intelligence,
much like people who lack a sense of direction, although in both examples,
their skill level might be slightly improved with some coaching.  Likewise,
I have come across some people who have tremendous difficulty internalizing
a beat, despite it being ubiquitous in our culture.
