The hebrew union college-school of sacred music DOES in fact use the term
"Hazzan" as an official designation when conferring cantorial investiture
to those who graduate from the college.

>Membership in the ACC (American Conference of Cantors) is granted to those who
>have completed certified cantorial programs or have (I believe) passed a set
>of certification exams.

but first, membership in the ACC is granted to graduates of the HUC-JIR
School of sacred music.
