This discussion about cantors is very interesting, and I thought I'd add
something here. I consider myself a cantorial soloist, and am
comfortable with that term. While some congregants where I work like
to think of me as their cantor or chazzan (it makes them feel proud), I
try my best to clarify the difference between a cantorial soloist and an
ordained cantor.
At my own synagogue (Congregation Beth Simchat Torah in NYC), we use the
term Ba'al T'filah for the person who is functioning in the cantorial
role. I personally love the terms Shaliach Tzibur and Ba'al T'filah.
P.S. Does anyone have a clue of what the date of next year's Hava
Nashira might be?
