Our congregation does this, too...and we noticed right away how seemingly
neutral it is to those who do not understand the Hebrew meaning of the words.
I think this speaks to me of the importance of studying and learning, always
striving to learn and know more, no matter how much I think I already know.
Only with the information can we have "informed choice." I would really miss
the beauty of the original words if they were changed to somehow be more
inclusive or gender neutral. The idea of creating new prayers without totally
eliminating the old still appeals to me.
