My comments were not directed at the messenger. Steve's suggestion, indeed,
works. I was reacting only to the overall framework which encourages these
(to me) unnecessary substitutions.

While I may or may not agree with the anti-political-correctness cabal, I am
more struck by the fact of Steve Dropkin offering a perfectly harmless and
possibly helpful suggestion, then watching a tremendous burst of negativity
result from it. If he didn't know better, he might feel as if he were being
personally attacked, or lumped in with the "politically correct" power
trippers trying to lord it over everyone else.
To the best of my recollection, it was just a simple suggestion, and I
thought
it was a pretty good one. I didn't see it as a threat to our very way of
life.
Not that I would ever want to discourage people getting passionate with
their
opinions; it makes for great reading and great dialogue, but don't attack
the
messenger....
