I think comparing a song about a 'guy' named Michael who is off rowing his
boat around to any song which refers to God is not quite the same.
There is no need to convert Michael to Michelle because the song is about
Michael. Clearly Michael is a male figure.
In songs which refer to God, because of countless years of patriarchal
orientation of planet Earth, God has been refered to as a male. Well, I
for one am not comfortable with narrowing my definition of God to being
male which essentially is what this language does.
Political correctness is a pain in the (insert your politically correct
term for rear end here) for anyone who grew up using different terms.
Change is hard. But if we struggle through this difficult period of
changing our language to be sensitive and not limiting to all folk, then
our children won't have to...because it will already be in place. There
will be no need to use the term politically correct because the language
will already be in place.
Indian/Native American, audience/congregation, Lord/God...our language is
so important and every word means something different.
Which words do we want to teach to our children?
