Judy, Adrian And Rich--
Isn't it wonderful when there's no wrong answer and no right one either!!
I believe that A and J are right, but at the same time so is Rich. The
difference here is between songLEADING and performing and jamming.
The latter is something all of us DON'T do enough of together, especially when
we ARE together. Songleading though is a completely different dynamic that
starts to lose its power when there are multiple leaders and extra musicians.
In my experience, one of the key goals in songleading is to create and
maintain focus, both within the group and over the group. This is never an
easy thing to do. The really good songleader's make it "look" easy, but this
is due to vast experience.
It's kind of like juggling 10 balls in the air at the same time. Not really
very easy, eh?
Rich, you are so right. We all, as musicians need to play and jam(we really
should) more together. But my vote is not to cofuse the two art forms.
Songleading is an entity unto itself. Often we use/deploy more than one
songleader in the group(like in camp dining rooms) but usually there is only
ONE leader at a time in front of the group. This is because of the control and
focus needs. There is so much work/practice/experience still needed in this
area always.
We all should strive to improve and enhance our music skills as musicians.
Let's try to remember they are two DIFFERENT sets of skills that we're try to
hone. It ain't easy( but it is FUN!!!)
