To Everyone who reads music and to those who don't--
I am an "ear" musician. A self taught guitarist at 14. There were no books
about songleading 25 years ago at all. Certainly no e-mail chats.
I only started writing music about 6 years ago, even though I never thought I
could. But I soon realized that whether I could afford it or not( moneywise),
that if I wanted credibility as a music teacher, let alone a composer, I'd
have to be more than just an "ear" musician.
Judy C-G is right! We owe it to ourselves to do our homework. I did play the
piano as a child and remembered only the VERY basics of how to read music.
Most everything else I forgot. Then I joined my Temple's choir 5 years ago. I
was FORCED to look at and understand the notes. Cruelling at first, this is
now beginning to pay off. Though I am TOTALLY lost with this notation thing
that you are all sharing(I'll admit it!! ), basic music theory is really a
must for songleading and EVERY songleader. If for no other reason than it
teaches us how to properly choose singing keys(using capos) and transposing,
etc.
If the investment we make is $ driven, then spend $20 on a couple of BASIC
music theory books. Biggset bang for the buck, by far........We owe it to
ourselves.
