Rachelle,

I think you are right in your mention of comfortable range.  I would
personally bring it in a note or two on both ends and say from A below middle
C to D above middle C is comfortable for most "untrained" singers.  If you
keep things pitched in this general range, most will be able to comfortably
sing along.
