Re: Supporting Joel Siegel's Viewpoint

Chag Purim Sameach everyone . . . and this IS a serious message.

It seems we are having a very appropriate dialogue about how we all use
the internet--including discussion lists--and try not to be overwhelmed
by the volume of information. Since joining this list, I have enjoyed
the opportunity to share info, but I also find myself weighing whether
the volume of messages that aren't useful will make it too difficult to
remain.

Unlike some who participate in this list, I spend only a small part of
my day at the computer, and have no wish to increase that by very
much! Email for me is a tool for communicating with colleagues and
B'nai Mitzvah families (including getting draft of speeches for
editing!), organizing services and meetings, and staying in touch with
friends.

I would like to support Joel's call for self-discipline, and especially
to ask that those replying to a message take a moment to decide whether
it is really useful to reply to the whole list, rather than directly to
the individual who wrote the message, and to take another moment to
reply directly when it is!

I could use a filter on this list--but that would mean I'd be avoiding
reading messages sent to the list--which is not the point of being
involved!

In all fairness--this week HAS been a little better, and I appreciate
the self-discipline of everyone to remain within the topic. I really
want to stay with this discussion and appreciate everyone's involvement.
