You raise good points, Adrian.  I realize on re-reading my message that I
gave the impression that I am rigidly against the use of popular melodies.
I am not. 

 I agree with you regarding the stick-in-your-head quality of commercial
tunes and I am grateful to be affiliated with an open, flexible and
evolving religion. I just think that if I had learned the Jewish prayers
through the use of popular music and that is the way I remembered them that
the magic of the traditional melodies would not have anchored me to my
Jewish identity or connected me to my ancestors.

I love this discussion.
