Rachelle, I don't think anybody in this discussion was doubting the importance
of passing on traditional melodies.
The big question has been what are to be considered "traditional"? I grew up
in a conservative synagogue, so those tunes are "traditional" for me. They
also seem to continue to be sung in almost all orthodox services I have
attended and most conservative. The big changes seem to be in Reform services
and tunes, with a lot of that filtering into some Conservative services and
even some Orthodox. The other day I heard Kedusha chanted to the tune of
Hatikvah at our Ortho. congregation.
