Raquel, how bold of you! Was there really Jewish music before Debbie? The
nerve!
You are right about standardization for the leader. I have been in dozens of
synagogues around the US, and almost all the Conservative and Orthodox ones I
have visited use a majority of the same tunes. In the Reform services I have
attended, there was much standardization, using Gates of Prayer, but the key
tunes in Shma and the Amidah were quite different among synagogues. Perhaps
it would help if the Reform movement -- which is the predominant movement in
America -- would at least decide on a standardized group of prayers that would
be recognizable from one place to another? Maybe they should use the liturgy
developed at HaNashir!!!
