In response to the current discussion on the use of popular
culture melodies -- I have two thoughts:
1) While these songs may be easy to teach and learn and get
people singing, the settings one learns as children "stick" in our
memories, and then you get adults who are very enamored of singing these
second-rate settings that don't fit the tone of the words; and
2) there are so many musical, beautiful, ethnic (i.e. modal)
melodies from our heritage - we have a duty to teach and perform this
music to get it into the ears of our people, who otherwise would not be
exposed to music outside their popular culture.
