Dear Jess,
As the mother of a child who is addicted to pot and to alcohol, I cannot
condone any "harm reduction" discussions as ethical or moral!!! How can you
suggest "harm reduction" so they just use a little dope? Where do you draw
the line - okay for pot, a little coke, but never heroin??
Tell them they need to QUIT while they are young. Better to begin talking
about 12-step programs, coping skills, and the real issues - that the more
they use, the more likely they are going to end up hooked on something!!
Put in the Jewish values of taking care of one's body which is created
B'tzelem Elohim and which is not ours to destroy. Talk about other ways in
which a person can find joy and pleasure without chemically altering their
moods.
The real scary thing with my daughter is that it turned out that her use was
actually masking the symptoms of bi-polar disorder. It took two years to
finally determine what was going on!!
I BEG OF YOU TO DO NOTHING THAT REMOTELY CONDONES SUBSTANCE USE!
Best wishes for a Happy Chanukah.
Alice
