Well Jessica, executing a song writing session would go something like this.

Talk about why people write songs. Play them some different examples of
Jewish music. Get them to decide whether to do a rap or take a tune they
already know or whether they want to make up their own. And then they will
either write the lyrics or music and just have a bash and see what happens.
It will help to have some kind of instrument around, keyboard or piano or
rhythm. The more you write the better you get.

A little thing I am doing tomorrow at the end of a three week programme is
I am getting the 14yr olds I have been working with to go into the 7 yr
olds and teach the song they will have (hopefully) just completed. The
intention is to make it all live exciting, relevant and useful. And music
has to be passed on doesn't it?

Never push them to write to much about what you think they should write
about. Try and find out what they want to write about.

Regards

Jess
