One other suggestion with which I have had good luck:
Make friends with the flight attendants. Get to your gate early and strike up
a conversation with the attendant who's getting ready to staff your flight.
Almost every plane, except for the smallest commuters, have a special baggage
compartment reserved for flight attendants. There is also usually plenty of
room in there for your guitar (it's usually the equivalent of one of those
first-class hanging closets). Anyway, mention to the flight attendant how
important your guitar is to you and how you're really afraid to check it -
often they'll offer to let you use "their" storage on the plane! It's worked
for me more than once.
