All of these specifics may be true, in regard to classifications of Yom Tovim
and V'Samachta appropriateness but I will tell you I have davened in Chabad
shuls for the past 22 years and this song is a staple song in our Purim
celebebration. Same melody is often used for L'cha Dodi on Friday nights when
we're
within the "celebration zone". Granted with Chabad that celebration zone may
start earlier than other places but its sung with the words on Purim as well as
Shalosh Regalim. I'm wondering why we don't labor the same way over the other
songs we sing at times when they have nothing to do with the liturgy for a
particular time. How often do we include Shalom Rav in a daytime or morning
service when it is part of the evening litugy? For that matter how often do we
include songs with English words that have no connection to the litugy but
beautifully enable us to create a Jewish musical experience. I understand the
value
of certain words, songs or melodies adding to our ability to create moods,
form emotions etc. and I am not being critical, to the contrary I am generally
behind it. I just find it interesting we are all of the sudden so worried
about
this one in particular.
