Hi Ros,
There are many different systems of chanting trope,( at least 15)
and within each system, there are variations. If she continues with the
Navigating the bible it will be a very different system from the one at
your temple. I would recommend that she not use the Navigating system
because it will only serve to confuse her as she will continue to hear
something else at services and in class.
I am assuming you are in a reform temple and reform uses (loosely)
the Avery /Binder method. The UAHC press has published two very nice
volumes on trope and chanting, one on Torah chanting and one on Haftarah
and megillot chanting. They come with CD's as well as music
transcriptions and are very nice to have. She can listen as well as
learn utilizing the music.
There is a great computer softwear program called Trope Trainer,
which has most of the systems in use, and you can try to figure out
which system Navigating the Bible uses. ( I believe it is loosely based
on Rosowsky, but I am not sure) This software is available through
www.kinnor.com
Again, if she continues with Navigating the Bible, she will never
become familiar with the norm( vis a vis the blessings) in the reform
movement. Again, I recommend the above two books. I have written out
the music to the Haftarah Blessings, and if you like I can send you
either a PDF file of the music of a wav file of me chanting the
blessings. Let me know how I can help.
