[HANASHIR:16561] RE: Early Childhood Developmentally Appropriate Practice

While kids who haven't learned the dinosaur song may possibly enjoy it just
as well with a substitution of lyrics, the kids I've already taught it to
would call me to task if I changed the lyrics.... and there really is
something to be said for the door/dinosaur rhyme that gets lost if the same
song is used with substitute lyrics.

My upcoming children's songbook of original songs has a Shabbat song that
also incorporates knocks at the door but has no dinosaur --- this song, btw,
was written months before this discussion began but was a positive response
to the obvious enjoyment my students get from the dinosaur song. It allows
children to imagine who is at the door or to volunteer which family members,
friends, etc., might come knocking.

Here are the lyrics of "Who's That A-Knocking:"

Who's that a-knocking at my door
Before the sun has set?
Is it hamalkah, the Sabbath Queen?
No, it's not her yet.
I hear one knock upon my door. [KNOCK]
Now come two knocks more. [KNOCK-KNOCK]
Shabbat shalom! Come in my home.
That's what Shabbat is for!

Lyrics c 2003

When the 60-song songbook/double-CD is completed (hopefully before the
summer), I'll let y'all know.

"Who's That A-Knocking" is an alternative that some may wish to use. As for
me, I'll use both with my own students!

In terms of substituting words for the dinosaur song - how about

There's my family knocking at the door, knocking 1, 2, 3....
