[HANASHIR:16345] Re: dinosaur song

I think every song has its own merits, place, use, etc. I think we need to
consider how much time we have with these kids and consider whether there are
better song choices to accomplish the same goals for what we're teaching. Doug
Cotler's "Thank you God" would fulfill the content needs that the dinosaur
seems to be being used for. I would use that instead personally.

Until just now I managed to avoid reading the lyrics of the "Dinosaur
song"... with so much email one needs to make swift "delete" decisions. But
here it is...a dinosaur in our midst...and I can't make believe it's not...

With advanced apologies to the author of this song... I'm wondering
about the desperate measures some of us are taking in trying to get our kids to
be excited about Judaism. A DINOSAUR to "sell" kids on Shabbat....? Why just
because we know little children love dinosaurs makes it wise, or even OK to
link them with something deep and meaningful so they can "get it", or learn
about it? Even tiny children have instincts about what is real and what is
phony.

Here's the thing: If children grow up in a home where Shabbat is
observed - then they will KNOW Shabbat. But if children grow up in households
where Shabbat is a day for chores and going to the mall and soccer practice -
then no amount of dinosaurs or aliens or monsters or robots or cutie-patootie
gizmos will make one bit of difference. Kids feel spirituality ( and
"authenticity") probably better than we do, and if anything they're picking up
on how desperate and/or hypocritical we are... teaching them things we don't
practice... in a Barney costume.

        Sorry. Nothing personal

Oh he wants to light the candles and
He wants to drink the wine.
He wants to eat the challah and
He wants to dine with us.
