Your agenda is interesting, but I am concerned about
the fact that there will be no audition. If this is
your policy, then you must have some mechanism to get
rid of the occasional member who may be completely
tone deaf. I have sung in every level of choir, from
rank amateur to professional, including the Chorus of
the Montreal Symphony Orchestra. I recently sang with
a synagogue choir which was open to all members;
inevitably, although there were all levels of musical
ability within the choir, there was one member (he
happened to sit right beside me) who was totally tone
deaf. In fact, he could sing only one single note.
After about six rehearsals, I noticed he was no longer
attending; I subsequently learned that he had been
asked to withdraw by means of a phone call, either
from the Cantor or the conductor - I don't know
exactly. I think you would be better off having a
basic audition to at least eliminate members who are
totally tone-deaf. Even though such people are few and
far between, they can throw off the entire choir. Good
luck.
