[HANASHIR:16078] RE: More Software and technical questions

Pogo makes some nice products, but their customer service attitude is bad. So,
WYBIWYG (what you buy is what you get).

I have used their Ripflash DX recorder/player. It's very small (about 1/2"
thick credit card). The internal microphone is pretty darn good compared to
some inexpensive mics I tried. And, the line - in works well with a good
pre-amped mic or using the line out from a mixer (to give it more of a workout,
I'd need a soundproof room). Although the battery life is good (10+ hours) I
wish it had a power source other than batteries. I used it to record an event
through the house sound system and it worked great (4 hours on internal memory
at near-CD quality -- 64kbps).

I also have a Radio Your Way, which is a AM/FM radio recorder and MP3 player.
It can record, but only at a low 'voice quality' bitrate. It also has a timer
which is cool for recording your favorite radio show (or, using the line in,
you could record from the internet or any other source).

  Michael:

Definitely report your findings to the group. I am considering the Pogo
products, and all user opinions would be valued.

Is there an inherent problem with loss of quality using a pre-amped mic into
a line input? Or does it depend on the quality of mic/preamp/input? I've
ordered Pogo's mic and will let you know what I think of it.

Following up--I have yet to find a portable MP3 Recorder/Player (ala the
Pogo RipFlash or the Archos Jukebox or the iPod) that has an actual stereo
microphone input.) Most of these devices have digitial voice recording via
an internal microphone, but the quality would be quite poor for
voice/musical recording. You could connect (and I believe Pogo sells) a
pre-powered microphone that would connect to the line level inputs of the
RipFlash, or connect the line level oputput of a small portabel mixer to
which you had conncted a microphone, but once again this makes the
   "portability" an issue.

It's only a matter of time before someone creates a true portable digital
recorder capable of accepting direct microphone inputs--until then, we're
   all stuck cobbling together solutions.

FWIW, the Marantz PMD670 has been getting rave reviews from some
  journalists
I know. But $700 is a lot to spend. It is also limited in recording time
  by
the size of the media you use. A typical 64Mb CF card will hold about one
hours worth of mp3 format recording at a 128kbps bitrate (considerably
  more
   at lower bitrates.)
