[HANASHIR:16066] Re: Havdalah Bat Mitzvah

The whole point of a Bar/Bat Mitzvah is to be called to the Torah in front of
the community. You can be called to the Torah when it is read which is
Saturday morning, Saturday afternoon, Monday and Thursday mornings, and
holidays (and Friday nights in some Reform Congregations). So, calling it a
'Havdallah' Bar/Bat Mitzvah is slang at best, since the Torah is not read at
Havdallah.

I sing at a occasional Havdalah service at our temple. What is "typical"
depends somewhat on the min hag of where you are, I think. At our shul, which
is reform, and very small, we do a regular service with ALL the morning
prayers, plus the addition of the havdalah prayers. I would guess that the
thinking is that to the bar/bat mitzvah child, it would not be as "complete"
if one left out all the usual prayers. After all, one of the reasons we often
chant Torah on Friday night which is not typical either, is that it would be
the only opportunity for congregants to hear it as we don't typically have Sat.
morning services. So although we know what the traditions are, we sometimes
tweak the rules in order to educate, expose, and make available opportunities
the congregation would not ordinarily get.
