Friends,
The best remedy for laryngitis or vocal strain is a day or two of complete
voice rest - as the voice begins to return, do some very, very light humming
(glides) to keep the cords toned.
Aside from rest, I have found steam treatments to be extremely helpful.
Boil a pot of water, put it on the table (on a newspaper or something) then
add a a shpritz of eucapyptus oil, put a towel over your head and breath,
till you get tired of sitting there. I do this every hour when I have a cold
or laryngitis. I have found lemon oil works nicely two. I use sage oil
sometimes. For infections, go with tea tree oil if you can stand the smell.
I have been able to knock out bacterial infections in two days by steaming
every hour.
All of these oils have potent anti-viral and anti-bacterial properties. I'm
not a physician of course, so please consult your doctor if you have
questions about this. You can research these and other oils in books on
aroma therapy.
Steaming, by the way, is a great way to relax the voice after a service.
(Remember that the heat will make your face red for several minutes.)
Good luck, shana tova and gamar tov,
jeff
