I have quite a random collection of recordings on vinyl. The problem with
most recordings is that they only feature what the artist or producer
considers to be "the greatest hits" of RH/YK.
The one that has probably sold the most is Richard Tucker's Yom Kippur
recording, produced and arranged by Sholom Secunda. Great singing by him,
low-fi recording, cheesy organ and narration. Available just about anywhere.
The recently-produced recording (Transcontinental) "Shirei T'shuvah" is a
companion piece to the written-music compilation by the same name. It's
good for learning melodies but (not meaning to offend anyone here who was
involved in its creation) sounds pretty devoid of kavanah and krecht.
My favorite is Shlomo Carlebach's Rosh Hashanah two-tape set. It follows
the services of Maariv, Shacharit, and Musaf, and as a bonus you get a
wonderfully-inspiring spoken message from Reb Shlomo z"l himself. It gets
a little spotty in places (some intonation issues), but to my ears that
gives it some realism, in that Rosh Hashanah is a marathon for cantors! I
am from time to time amazed that so many of us don't seem to be interested
in Carlebach's HUGE contribution to our musical heritage. It's available
from jewishmusic.com.
My 2 shekels.

Andy
