[HANASHIR:14642] A Discourse on discourse

Borrowing liberally from a statement used on all postings from another
Jewish e-mail list, I offer this comment (with apologies to Daniel Faigin):

One  hallmark  of Hanashir  is  "respectful pluralism."  To  that  end,
remember that this list considers all movements in the spectrum from
Humanistic to Orthodoxy to be equally valid expressions of Judaism. It also
considers all forms of musical expression to be equally valid. The focus of
this list is the transmission of Judaism through the medium of music. Our
discussions should work towards improving that process.

And a few thoughts of my own-

1. When there is disagreement, it is important to remember to critique or
discuss the idea itself, and not the individual advancing the argument.

2. We may define our own boundaries, but we should not define boundaries for
others.

3. This list remains un-moderated, i.e., I do not have to approve postings
before they go to the list. I prefer to keep it that way, and allow the
community to be self-policing. When necessary, I do contact people privately
to discuss concerns about the appropriateness of something they have posted.
If you have such concerns, please write to me and/or the poster privately
off the list.

4. To quote Benjamin Franklin: We must all hang together, or assuredly we
shall all hang separately. There is an even deeper meaning of this quotation
when applied to Jews and our history.
