I can see from the replies in the last few minutes that this subject,
outside of the purely Jewish circle, has raised a few hackles. Sorry if I
added to that.
As far as JEWISH folk music of the 50s and 60s is concerned, the
Israeli singers I spoke of plus others of their time might be considered as
well
as Ladino songs, Jewish songs in Farsi, Yiddish songs (Ruth Rubin's work is
invaluable) et al.
It would seem that what decade the songs were first being sung as part
of the Jewish folk culture outside of their own ethnic circles would have a
bearing on that. Ruth Rubin's books on Yiddish songs are invaluable as are many
varied ethnic Jewish collections.
