Hello:
It's so interesting to read people's opinions/comments on these issues. We
are all coming at this question from different perspectives and situations,
and my suggestion would be to try to find out what your director's is. Why
does he/she want 50% secular music? Is it for the english? Is it because
he/she particular likes certain songs? Is it because parents requested? Is
it because you have a lot of non-Jewish kids at the camp (like I do)? I
strongly believe that once you identify the reasoning for this seemingly odd
and straightforward request, you will better be able to respond to it. It
may turn out that the reasonings for this request could be solved without
using 50% secular music, you never know until you ask.
As for the songs in English vs Hebrew...great question. While I don't do
10/90, we also do a high percentage of English music. However, I think that
probably our highest percentage would be the combinations, songs like those
by Debbie Friedman that are mostly in English, but encorporate Jewish
concepts with Hebrew words. I find bi-lingual songs like that to be a
wonderful introduction to Hebrew singing, especially for my younger campers.
Have a great summer!!!!
~smile always~
