Further -- try at all costs to get it in the cabin of the plane.  Out of six 
plast Hava Nashiras, with four flights each trip, I have had only ONCE to not 
get my guitar, in a hard case, in the cabin.  Be persistent.

If there is no other way, then check it at the gate.  Insist on watching the 
handler walk it down to the luggae compartment.  Then it will be waiting for 
you as you get off in the jetway.  It's certainly a better strategy than 
sending it off on a conveyor belt.
